In almost 100 out of 100 calls I’ve ever been on with a contractor, when asked “what makes you different from your competition?” I always get the same answer:
- We do great work
- We pay attention to the customer
Well guess what? So does everyone else. In fact, if you didn’t do great work, how would you expect to stay in business? And if you were terrible at customer service, you’d never get another referral again.
So I’m sorry to tell you, you are going to have to come up with something else that distances you from everyone else you compete with. You can make it your pricing (higher or lower) you can make it your timeliness, you can make it your warranty, but you can’t make it your work or your customer service. Oh, and you can’t make it your “attention to detail” either, that’s craftsmanship for the uptight.
There are 100 ways to make yourself stand out…find one and make it your mantra, make it the thing that is the entire fiber of your business, and no one can take it away from you or compete with you on it.
