I want to start off this post with a story about my dad. My Dad came from a little village in Abruzzo Italy during World War II. In Italy he apprenticed for an ornamental ironsmith and was taught how to craft some of the most beautiful railings, chandeliers, candelabras and other ornamental iron work you could imagine. He was good at his job and had the scars to prove it (he lost his index finger on a 2,000 pound cold press machine).<\/p>\n

But my Dad had a saying, it went something like this in his best broken English,“Never do what you can hire someone else who can do it better.”<\/em> That quote always stuck with me because my Dad liked to do everything, but he knew his limitations.<\/p>\n

Which turns my attention towards you…<\/b><\/p>\n

You may hire subs, you may hire direct employees, you may hire bookkeepers and accountants and marketing people. You may have hired all of them in your time but they all have the same thing in common: You hired them to do what THEY do best, not what YOU do best!<\/strong><\/p>\n

So I want to ask you…what did you hire your website to do?<\/b><\/p>\n

If you hired your website to be brochureware, that is to say a way for someone who ALREADY knows you exist to find your phone number or email online, then you have achieved your goal.<\/p>\n

If you hired your website to bring you in new leads, it’s time to ask this question:<\/p>\n

How is your site doing this summer?<\/b><\/p>\n

If your site is sitting on its ass while you work yours off…then something is wrong. If your site isn’t pulling its weight, something is wrong.<\/p>\n

Would you let the new gopher you hired get away with 3 sugars when you asked for 4? Hell no! So why are you letting your site get off without selling anything for you?<\/p>\n

It’s time…<\/b><\/p>\n

It’s time to start taking stock of how things have worked so far this year. If you made changes to your site this year, it’s time to evaluate those changes and find out if they are working.<\/p>\n

Just like all new hires, your website has a probationary period as well. At some point, it is going to have to start pulling its own weight.<\/p>\n

Why?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Because your website sees more eyeballs than any other marketing or advertising initiative you can do. That’s right, even if you suck at SEO, more people are crashing into your site by accident than are seeing your direct mail on purpose.<\/p>\n
