If you have a contractor website that has exactly the same content page after page with the only distinguishing difference being a city or zip code you are in trouble.
Google’s Penguin update specifically addressed this issue. You know what I am talking about right? You see sites that try and make sure they get found in every nook and cranny of every market they operate in. Problem is, with Penguin the penalty for duplicate content will not only affect the specific offending page, but the site overall. So if you thought it was cool to have 50 pages exactly the same…fear the penguin.

What about if you work in more than one town, city or county? Just being local dies not pay the bills. I have one if those sites with duplicate content cause it go me let’s of leads?
It may have worked in the past. It won’t going forward. One day your site is going to fall off a cliff Nick. I’ve told you that, Chris has told you that. The search engines are going to catch up with you at some point. I hope you have a backup plan.
Hi Darren,
What if you are copying testimonials from your customers from third party websites (like Homestars and Angie’s List) and using them on your website? Is this going to run you the risk of being penalized for duplicate content?
Hey Heidi,
It is 100% duplicate content. Which means it should appear on your site first.
